About Us - Mission, Vision and Values

Our Mission

Our mission is to live together as a Christ-centered, authentic, sustainable community and to help people to discover their value and and pursue their purpose in a community.

First, we want all aspects of our life together to be Christ-centered, meaning that everything we do is about loving, trusting, obeying, and following Jesus.  Second, we want to live together authentically.  This means we are a safe place where people can take off their masks and open up and connect with God, with each other, and with themselves.  Third, we want to pursue our sustainability through a simple, non-consumer lifestyle that involves entrepreneurial forms of production and agriculture.  And, fourth, we want to be a place of spiritual formation and of welcome, where people can come and learn God's purpose for them and how they can pursue that purpose in community with others.

Our name, "Shepherd's Home of Servant Leadership," further reflects our mission. Our name shows that we want to be like a home - a place of retreat and welcome. We also want our life together to be centered around the life of Jesus - our Good Shepherd. And, we want to be a place that practices and teaches the values of God's Kingdom, which are reflected in the principles of servant leadership.

Our Vision

Our vision is that we will see the birth of new and unique Christ-centered authentic, sustainable communities.

Our vision is about church planting – but we are talking about birthing authentic communities of the people of God in many contexts and forms. These could be business communities, agricultural communities, non-profit communities - formed around people's call and their desire to serve, as Jesus did, the poor, the captives, the blind, and the oppressed. (Luke 4:18).

Our Values

Our core values, around which we act, reflect and make our decisions together, are:

Christ-centered community - living as a sustainable, life-giving, authentic, inter-dependent community whose highest joy and desire is to know and follow Christ together by faith.

Safety - a place of radical acceptance, truth, transparency, forgiveness and trust that creates the opportunity for Holy Spirit led growth and community-based accountability.

Love - treasuring people and all that they are, including the gift of their brokenness, and constantly thinking about how to serve people, so that they grow and become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, and servants themselves.

Purpose - believing that each person is created by God with a unique purpose. A passion for serving people by equipping them to know and follow their call in community.

Our Educational Philosophy

The Shepherd's Home is a place of learning and education, however we are unlike most traditional educational institutions. We learn primarily by practicing our beliefs.  At Shepherd's Home, we take the study of Jesus' words very seriously.  But, this is relatively easy, compared to living them out in our lives.  This is what we try to do each day - through a process of what we call "action and reflection." As such, our general educational philosophy is: Putting on the mind of Christ through an inner and outer journey of action and reflection in the context of a loving community. An important part of this is providing a safe, loving community, where people are not judged, where their potential is imagined, where their brokenness is valued, and where they are free to share their struggles and their unique story.

Our Faith

Shepherd’s Home is a non-denominational, Christ-centered community.  The life and teaching of Jesus Christ, as described in the Bible, serves as our central model for our life together.  Over the centuries followers of Jesus have experienced the redemptive power and transformational capacity to serve others in community with love, grace, and forgiveness. We seek to be a part of that historical tradition. We believe in one true God who exists as Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the divine inspiration and authority of the Bible; that Jesus Christ, who was fully human and fully God, died in the place of sinners; the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ and His ascension to heaven as Lord and Savior; that salvation is God's gift through grace for sinners who repent and place their faith in Jesus Christ; and the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit in the life of believers.  Our programs are open to anyone who desires to humbly seek Christ’s call on their lives in the context of an open, accepting and authentic community.
